European cities have become increasingly diverse and are home to immigrants from all over the world. The process of integrating immigrants has become a hotly debated issue as political concerns about social cohesion have grown. Despite these debates, there is a lack of knowledge on how social interactions actually develop between individuals of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds in contexts where they meet on a daily basis. This book explores interethnic coexistence and the relationship between social interactions and neighbourhoods embeddedness in three multi-ethnic neighbourhoods in the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon, namely Mouraria/Martim Moniz, Monte Abraão and Costa da Caparica. It is based on a research report elaborated in the ambit of the EU-funded project GEITONIES - Generating Interethnic Tolerance and Neighbourhood Integration in European Urban Spaces.
