The history and the artistic values of the quinta of Monserrate , designed by De Visme, lived in by William Beckford and named by Lord Byron, is a reference in the international framework of Romanticism and form part of the cultural heritage of Sintra classified by UNESCO as a Cultural Landscape and World Heritage Site. Beckford´s worldly life, his restless spirit and, of course, his fortune, enable him to set up many places and homes. But it is felt that none of them received a posthumous evocation so worthy, creative and eloquent as that which Sir Francis Cook had the merit of designing and supporting in the second half of the nineteenth century, in making Monserrate one of the most beautiful places in Portugal.
